Digital Painting Techniques

This is a quick sketch that I created for he base layer of my painting, based on the theme of video game violence ( the angry gamer)

This is my first attempt at at digital painting. I feel that I was being a bit ambitious for my first attempt, I had no idea of what colours or brushes I was going to use and thought it wasn't going any where, but my tutor told me that paintings take time and patience, so I was determined to have another go but look at more simple forms like features to help build up some confidence.
I am quite pleased with this result, I took my time to pick the right colour pallet and used a much softer brush, then I slowly built up the forms forms until the forms took shape. Then I used the dodge and burn tools to further darken and lighten the tones. I think that the nose has the best finished result, the colours look more subtle than the eye which looks a little to vibrant, I also think that I should have given the colours of the iris more thought. Looking back I realise there are many tools in photoshop that could have helped me with this process, I could of used selections for the eyes to help me keep the iris round, I could have created custom brushes to help me achieve certain textures for the eye brows and I could have used layers to keep all the lights and darks tones separate, so there is definite room for improvement.

  1. You need to start mocking up some compositions ideas now. Do at least 6 roughs - for both ideas. Each an improvement / development from the last. Do them digitally as rough sketches.
